MICHAEL DELLâTHE NEXT ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIAL DYNASTY
In his room there, while he studied, he got an idea for making and selling computers. He started PC’s Limited to assemble computers from components and this later would become Dell Computer Corporation. It has almost always been profitable and the machines reliable. But Michael was so successful that he lost interest in school and set out to just be successful at what he loved to do. Success came easy and so did profit. By 2004 the company was shipping $45 billion worth of computers and equipment. Michael himself, according to the Fortune 400 list, is the 9th wealthiest individual in America with an estimated worth of $15.8 billion. Not bad for a kid who never finished university. He has taken up philanthropy in a big way as well—shades of Bill Gates. We will see much more of his business prowess in the years ahead and experience his softer side as well through his foundation activities. His model for business success and skills should inspire many more young entrepreneurs in the decades ahead.
He was brilliant, even as a teenager in the 80’s. Michael Dell was so adept that at 15 he took apart an Apple computer just to see how it worked. He was born into a prosperous Texas family and always had much of the best around him. Dell graduated from high school and headed off to University of Texas at Austin.
