JOHN GLENN--A/F PILOT IN TWO WARS, TEST PILOT, ORIGINAL ASTRONAUT, SENATOR, PATRIOT AND MORE

Who would have thought that a boy and plumber’s son from New Concord Ohio would grow up to be all of these and so much more that you would view him as the perfect all-round American hero. Yes the man, who is nearing his 87th year and fit as any man, has become the stuff of legends.  He flew 59 combat missions in the Pacific during WWII, and when the Korean conflict broke out in 1950 he flew another 63 missions and has won the Distinguished Flying Cross 6 times.
But he still seems like the country boy he always was when you meet him. On February 20, 1962 he sat atop an Atlas rocket and soared into space, orbiting our planet 3 times as the first American to circle the globe. Bobby Kennedy urged him to join elected public service where he was finally elected to the U.S. Senate. He was a hot-shot there too and authored many very important pieces of legislation.
Ohio loved its favorite son. He stayed in the Senate until 1998. Along the way he ran for President and Vice President but never got up there. That was OK, as he was still a great Patriot anyway. Glenn went to space again too, believe it or not, in 1998. He was the oldest man ever to go there and his research on elder-health is revolutionary and contributes each day to every person who has gray hair.
You will find he and his dear wife Annie every day at Ohio State University where they head the Glenn Institute for Public Service. Their aims are to improve the quality of public service and encourage young people to pursue careers in government. There he goes again being the perfect Patriot.
