GAINING STRENGTH AND SELF ESTEEM THROUGH POSITIVE BEHAVIOR

GAINING STRENGTH AND SELF ESTEEM THROUGH POSITIVE BEHAVIOR

Very few of us realize how much we choose the misery in our lives. Even when we do, we still go ahead and often it is to disaster. We say we don’t have the strength to choose better. But it is possible to become stronger in the same ways as addicts become addicted. That may sound strange but if you have ever smoked you know that you feel a weakness and continue the vice even though you know it is wrong or unhealthy. That is a negative addiction. Positive addictions or behaviors exist in sharp contrast to these. Some of these that you already do are things like jogging, or meditating, or charity pursuits. There are dozens of  others.

The criteria for choosing positive addictions in your life according to Doctor William Glasser MD break into six parts: something noncompetitive that you choose and can be done for at least an hour a day; it must be possible to do it easily without a great deal of mental effort; you can do it on your own; it must have some physical, mental or spiritual value for you; you must believe it will improve you; you must be sure that you will never become critical of yourself while you do it.

Doctor Glasser warns however that it not easy to become positively addicted. If you can find inner persistence and find the positive paths, and as he postulates be “addicted to them, you will be healthier and every part of your life will be happier. Then, who can say what will happen to our dear ones around us. They too could easily pick up your addiction.  The book is called Positive Addiction.
