IF AGING IS AN ART THEN SHERWIN B. NULAND IS THE GREATEST PRACTITIONER AND EXPERT

Dr. Sherwin B. Nuland has studied and written about the physical process of living and dieing his whole life. His landmark work and book, “How We Die”, set new ideas and guidelines in our perception of the final years we all will face. He has also written 8 other books for the every-reader that describe us physically and how we go through our years. Nuland is a clinical professor of surgery at Yale University and lectures constantly (even at his age) around the world at professional seminars and information lectures. He is now in his mid-seventies and his new research and love, “The Art of Aging”, is about how we should go about getting ourselves accustomed to living and enjoying the period that is our final years.

He tells us, using himself often as a model, that creativity and employing all of the wisdom we have accumulated to get to this life-segment, is the key to even extending our lives. He lectures anyone who will listen that deliberate discovery of new paths of enjoyment really can make a difference.

He also cites that the onset of aging can be very gradual and most of us are so surprised when it comes one day. It is not a set age, he tells us, but is different for everyone. The things that may change the most in you are your appearance, reflexes, physical endurance and even sexual appetites. Most of them are rarely welcome, as anyone who is 60+ will admit. But growing old is not a disease as we think it is, but if you work at it, it becomes an art.

His many research case histories and experiments show that the doorstep to adding further years to our existence is really hard work. But it also can be fun. He cites travel expansion, hobbies, serious involvement in charity and spiritual programs. The pursuits are endless. The rocking chair is out, he declares! Dr. Nuland believes he can reach the century mark himself. He surely will.
