BUSINESSES ARE NOW MORE POWERFUL THAN GOVERNMENTS WHEN IT COMES TO PROVIDING A BETTER WORLD

Capitalism is in the midst of profound transformation, according to Professor Bruce Piasecki in his newest volume he calls “World Inc.” Yes the world and times are changing. We live and trade on a world basis. For instance 51 of the world’s top 100 economies are now corporations (not countries). More than 40% of world trade now takes place within multinational corporations. So who are these all-powerful corporations and what kind of men and women run them? Big business, which many often put down, is bigger than ever. And that’s not all bad. For instance many of them have adopted stances that are good for our environment and good for our countries too. Capitalism is unrecognizable to even the leaders we revered in 1950.

You recognize such corporate names as Toyota, GE, Wal-Mart, HP…there are dozens of them, and they all are seriously looking at the world we see today and far into the future.

As for the leaders that head them, Piasecki says that their model could be Abraham Lincoln. That may sound strange but he says that the President was the ultimate leader who knew what the problems and stakes were and supported his lieutenants completely and allowed them to carry through their assigned tasks. For instance, Lincoln’s complete backing of General Sherman throughout the Civil War, and victory.  

The leaders we need to head these corporations today and tomorrow must be socially conscious to such an extent that we believe them and back them completely. Our future, we all understand, will ultimately depend on their actions. The people who survive and prosper, the economics of the countries they live in, the standards of development in each of them, will rest almost solely on their shoulders. Yes we will have elected leaders, but they will be subordinate to the corporations. We are in a new era and the future will belong to those that can grow worldwide in all the areas necessary to the survival of the planet. For those of us who were alive in 1950 it is all very fascinating.
