MR. HEWLETT AND MR. PACKARD GAVE US THE KIND OF WORLD WE ENJOY TODAY
Bill and Dave met at Stanford on a football field and the year was 1936. Two years later they began the saga that would turn into a world class corporation. These two engineers began their first invention development program on the workbench in their backyard garage. It was to be an audio oscillator, and what came later we can honestly say was a revolution in electronics and even the founding of Silicone Valley. From the beginning their personal integrity and devotion to quality and the customer ruled their thinking in developing products. They also believed in their employees, which was unusual.
Famous author Michael Malone has written a very different kind of book called “Bill & Dave”. It is different because it tells the real and complete story of these two young geniuses, who have led the world in electronic advances. They may also have helped us to win many military battles internationally. Today their company has become synonymous for progress and developing some of the most advanced consumer products, with a consistent quality that is the envy of the world. They have been copied many times but never equaled. The HP Way, as it is called, is the model such luminary companies as Apple, Cisco, Sun, eBay, Google, Intel and more follow and emulate. HP also has more than 100,000 employees worldwide that inherited the same philosophy as Bill and Dave.
Without their developments, both here and in Japan, there would not be a chip industry here or even many of the NASA firsts, like going to the moon and Mars either. They set the tone and patterns for so much of what we see today in the industrial, consumer and even in the military and space exploration world. Who can forget their entry, before anyone else, into the computer and printer business, or their adventures in research in hundreds of areas. Speaking of hundreds, that long in the future the world will remember and still be emulating the “HP Way.” Thanks Bill & Dave.
